The Yellow Cow

The purpose of a Jolly Animals fable is to develop simplified child-friendly concepts from specific verses within the Holy Books that mention a particular Animal.

The Yellow Cow is built around verses 67 to 71 of Surah Al-Baqarah. However, this is not a religious book. The Animal fable within is only inspired by verses of the Holy Quran.

By studying and examining the verses and their explanations (tafseer), we created the story of a bright Yellow Cow that feels like she does not fit in.

She thinks that she's the wrong size, age, colour, and talent. The readers join her journey of self-discovery to find out just how special she is.

The Yellow Cow encourages children to appreciate and celebrate the traits that make them different, by realising that they are loved exactly the way they are.

How the The Yellow Cow concepts were born.

What Animal is she?

And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."

How old is she? What’s her age?

They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[ Allah ] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."

What colour is she?

They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.' "

What does she do? What’s her talent?

They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allah wills, will be guided."

He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.' " They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.

The moral behind The Yellow Cow:

Reading this book to our kids, we want them to feel confident and empowered. Every child is unique in their own way. The Yellow Cow is unconventional in every way and does not know what she is good at.

On her journey, she comes to the subtle realisation that the trait she took for granted, is the trait that makes her special. At the beginning of her story, she stood out from the herd because of being a different colour; bright yellow. On her journey, she realises that she is the only cow that can count ants, giving the term 'bright' an entirely new meaning in her eyes.
